For a long time this had a major impact on how the screen can handle fast moving scenes in movies and games and has for a long time been seen as one of the most important specs buyers should look at. Natively Supported Blur Reduction Methods. ![]() How to Enable LightBoost Strobed Backlight.Our Own Tests and Findings – LightBoost.Many monitors don't have a customizable pulse width control, but we still take the measurement, and the Longest Pulse Width Brightness and Shortest Pulse Width Brightness are the same on those monitors. This measurement is important if you game in a well-lit room or if you don't like dark displays and want the monitor to get bright. We measure the brightness with the pulse phase at its longest. If you look at the graphs above, the pulse width is essentially the peak of how long the backlight is on for.Ī longer pulse width results in higher peak brightness because the backlight is on for longer. ![]() To combat this, monitor manufacturers have started to come out with customizable BFI features to control the pulse width to your liking-a short pulse width means that the backlight is off for a longer time, and a longer pulse width means that it's on for a longer time. One common problem with BFI features is that they make the screen dimmer because the backlight isn't on as much. We also check to see if backlight strobing can be used simultaneously with the variable refresh rate feature, and we measure the backlight pattern. We photograph the appearance of blur on the monitor and play with the different settings to see which customization it supports. When evaluating the backlight strobing or BFI feature of a monitor, we adjust the settings to determine the refresh rate range at which it works. It happens when the backlight of the display is flicker-free, so a BFI feature introduces flicker, or black frames, to help reduce this persistence blur. BFI features aim to reduce persistence blur caused by the sample-and-hold method that all displays use, which results in a trail appearing behind fast-moving objects. Many gaming monitors have a feature known as backlight strobing, which is commonly known as black frame insertion (BFI).
